With the advent of Christianity, the birth of Jesus Christ began to be celebrated on December 25 (old style) or January 7 (new style). The ancient pagan rite was timed to one of the greatest Christian holidays - Christmas. New religious carols with biblical and Christian images appeared. A week after Kolyada (Christmas) on December 31 (according to the Russian Orthodox Church) or January 13 (according to the Russian Orthodox Church), the Generous Evening was celebrated, timed to meet the New Year.
The main event of the Generous Evening and the New Year in Ukraine was giving, which was accompanied by a mandatory round of houses to wish people happiness, health and well-being in the New Year. Christmas carols begin to be sung exactly at midnight before the New Year. They should not be mixed with carol singing. At a time when carols are always and necessarily sung by a choir, then shdervkas can be performed solo.

Впоследствии с введением на Руси христианской религии как государственной (так называемое "крещение Руси") обряд колядования был приспособлен к празднованию Рождества Христова. Священники и монахи создали новые религиозные колядки с библейскими образами, которые также приобрели большую популярность в народе. За обработку и восстановление колядок брались выдающиеся композиторы: Николай Лысенко, Станислав Людкевич и т.д. В колядках, по традиции, чествовали всех членов семьи: хозяина, хозяйку, парня, девушку. Колядование сочеталось с соответствующим театрализованным представлением, танцами, музыкой. Колядовали группами, предварительно распределив обязанности: атаман "береза", "звездочет", "михоноша" и "ряженые".
