Carols and Christmas carols were extremely popular ritual songs among the people. Carols are sung from December 25 to January 7. They were timed to Christmas. And donations - before the New Year (according to the old style - January 14).
Christmas carols are the oldest folklore genre. They preserve the memory of the old tribal era and are associated with the winter turning of the sun into summer, which was called the holiday of Kolyada. It was celebrated on December 25 (old style), when the night was the longest. Nature seemed to freeze at this time. It was believed that the sun was eaten by the evil Korochun - a dark Slavic deity. The goddess of the sky Kolyada was giving birth to a new sun, a little Bozhich.

"At a time when there was neither land nor sky, only one blue sea - in the middle of this sea there were two oaks, and two doves sat on the oaks; the doves went down to the bottom of the sea, got sand and stone, from which the earth was created, the sky and heavenly bodies". The mythological plot reflected in this ancient carol existed even in the days of the Scythians: on the bronze relief from the Scythian mound there is a tree with birds, and the sun and the moon. И соответственно, представители того мира такие же, как и мы, но немного другие. И соответственно поэтому колядники переодевались по категориям - "чужой", потусторонний. Это мог быть не человек, а животное, так в группах колядников появились звериные образы. Это – могли быть “чужие” по категории – инородный, так у нас появляется, например, “немец”. Это могут быть не люди, а вообще – демонические существа, поэтому колядники обматывали руки соломой, становились на ходуле или наоборот приседали, говорили очень глубокими, низкими голосами, или – наоборот, очень писклявыми.
