After that, such dramas unfolded. My father took kutyu - a symbol of honoring ancestors. And with the kutyu, he could first go to the cattle, the prognostic function - to have healthy cattle, for the future harvest. Then he would go out into the yard, in some regions he would put kutyu into his mouth, and in some - with a spoon of kutyu he would go out into the yard and call Frost. But not "grandfather Frost", that Soviet one, but Frost - as an element that has a completely negative connotation: "Frost, Frost, come to my place to eat, and if you don't go now, then don't go ever: no for rye, no for wheat, not for rich arable land." That is, a kind of countermeasure so that this Frost does not freeze anything. And the children at that time, as if they were afraid of that Frost, hid somewhere under the table, and in general, when they hid under the table, they had to "becat" and "mecat" - to imitate the cattle that should be herded next year.

They sing these songs, moving in a carol band from house to house and standing under the window or near the door. After singing and congratulations after it (as a rule, in verse form - the so-called "pokolyad") carolers receive some kind of reward (also a remnant of ancient magical ritual actions). Songs about Malanka and the New Year's show-game "Goat" are separate categories of donations. In some places in Western Ukraine, the so-called rindzivki, performed at the time of the spring equinox, have also survived.

Митрополит Василий Липкивский так характеризовал колядки в рождественской проповеди "Значение колядок": Как хорошо в наших колядках сочетаются и останки этого еще языческого времени и величественный свет веры Христовой на нашей чисто народной, национальной почве! Колядки, это, безусловно, чисто народное произведение, и по содержанию, и по пению, но вместе с развитием народной жизни на содержание колядок оказывались разные влияния, и больше всего, безусловно, со стороны духовной науки. Во времена развития наших украинских братств и братских школ, бурсаки этих школ и их учителя, которые в ту пору добывали себе жизнь пением кантов и колядок по праздникам, внесли много школьной науки в колядки…
