All this is sung about in carols, which were known long before the beginning of Christian times in Ukraine, it is also found in ordinary rituals, such as: twelve wormwood, twelve Christmas Eve dishes, calling for a dinner of frost, a wolf, a black storm and evil winds, grandfather on penance, hay on the table. All these movements, actions and words, which at first glance have no meaning in a person's life, blow on the heart of each of us with the charm of the native element and are a living balm for the soul that fills it with powerful strength.

"At a time when there was neither land nor sky, only one blue sea - in the middle of this sea there were two oaks, and two doves sat on the oaks; the doves went down to the bottom of the sea, got sand and stone, from which the earth was created, the sky and heavenly bodies". The mythological plot reflected in this ancient carol existed even in the days of the Scythians: on the bronze relief from the Scythian mound there is a tree with birds, and the sun and the moon. Отдельное место занимают церковные коляды авторского, книжного происхождения (Тихая ночь, Святая ночь; Новая радость стала; и другие). По словам Г.Лужницкого, "с колядками история украинского театра входит в фазу т.н. магии слова. Дух воображения примитивного человека был митический и магический, а колядки по своей генезе — это первоначальные магические формулы, где заклинатель является актером, потому что во время заклинание он играет роль будущего "я" или высшей силы".
