Our distant ancestors tried to protect the newborn. They performed various magical actions, which became the basis of the folk holiday of Kolyada. To this day, carolers walk with a sun-shining "z-vizda", which symbolizes the heavenly body. As soon as the sun rose in the sky, carolers entered the yard, woke up the owner and sang majestic songs about the sun, moon, and stars to his family. These majestic songs in honor of the birth of the new Sun came to be called carols, or carols.

Do not confuse carols (folk songs) with carols (songs of religious (church) content) - dedicated to one of the most important Christian holidays - Christmas. Carols appeared, in which archaic motifs and images were intertwined with biblical ones (birth, life, torment, death and resurrection of Christ). A special place is occupied by church carols of authorial, book origin (Silent Night, Holy Night; New joy has become; and others). According to H. Luzhnytskyi, "with carols, the history of Ukrainian theater enters the phase of the so-called magic of the word. The spirit of primitive man's imagination was mythical and magical, and carols in their genesis are primitive magical formulas, where the conjurer is an actor, because during spell, he plays the role of the future self, or higher power."

С появлением христианства, 25 декабря (по старому стилю) или 7 января (по новому стилю) начали праздновать рождение Иисуса Христа. Старинный языческий обряд был приурочен к одному из величайших христианских праздников – Рождества Христова. Возникли новые религиозные колядки с библейско-христианскими образами. Они завоевали такую же популярность, как и старинные колядки.
