Carols and Christmas carols were extremely popular ritual songs among the people. Carols are sung from December 25 to January 7. They were timed to Christmas. And donations - before the New Year (according to the old style - January 14).
Christmas carols are the oldest folklore genre. They preserve the memory of the old tribal era and are associated with the winter turning of the sun into summer, which was called the holiday of Kolyada. It was celebrated on December 25 (old style), when the night was the longest. Nature seemed to freeze at this time. It was believed that the sun was eaten by the evil Korochun - a dark Slavic deity. The goddess of the sky Kolyada was giving birth to a new sun, a little Bozhich.

Когда спускалась Заря, начиналось празднование. В это время, во-первых, заносили в дом Дидуха. Под стол, под скатерть, под блюдо – кутью – клали солому, эту соломенную бабу, которая в нынешней трактовке уже символизирует ясли, в которых родился Христос. А первоначально, вероятно, это был символ зерна, богатого урожая. На углы стола ставили зубчики чеснока – обереги от нечистой силы. Начиналось все именно с Дидуха. Никто не садился за стол, пока отец не вносил в дом этого Дидуха.

Carols are, of course, a purely folk work, both in terms of content and singing, but along with the development of folk life, various influences were exerted on the content of carols, and most of all, of course, from the side of spiritual science. During the development of our Ukrainian fraternities and fraternal schools, the bursakas of these schools and their teachers, who at that time made a living by singing cantos and carols on holidays, contributed a lot of school science to carols...
