Колядников приглашали в дом, сажали за нарядный стол и угощали. Зерна, разбросанные колядниками, подбирали все к одному, хранили их, а весной бросали в землю первыми, надеясь, что они обеспечат хороший урожай.
В руках у колядников обязательно было солнце. Делали его из старых ободов, украшали разноцветными лентами.
Currently, winter in Ukraine is primarily associated with carols, which are sung on the holiday of Christmas (January 6-8 according to the new style). But carols were once pagan songs, against which the Orthodox Church initially waged an unsuccessful struggle and banned them. However, Kolyada rites proved to be very stable in Ukraine, marked in many ways by the features of pagan beliefs, reminiscent of both honoring the newborn sun and the cult of ancestors.
Why New Year and Christmas are associated with the Sun
If we talk about traditional Christmas, we need to look back to ancient pre-Christian times, when it was believed that the world was born at this time. That is, the world dies in one form, is born in another - the New Year is born. At Christmas, since ancient times, it was believed that such religious holidays were connected with the cycles of the solstice. Christmas, Christmas is the winter solstice. It was believed that the border between the worlds narrows to such an extent that it becomes so thin that a transition from one world to another is possible.
