Subsequently, with the introduction of the Christian religion as a state religion in Russia (the so-called "baptism of Russia"), the rite of caroling was adapted to the celebration of Christmas. Priests and monks created new religious carols with biblical images, which also gained great popularity among the people. Prominent composers undertook the processing and restoration of carols: Mykola Lysenko, Stanislav Lyudkevich, and others. In carols, according to tradition, all members of the family were honored: the master, the mistress, the boyfriend, the girlfriend. The caroling was combined with a corresponding theatrical performance, dances, and music. They caroled in groups, having previously distributed responsibilities: chieftain "birch", "star", "mihonosha" and "ryajeni". Metropolitan Vasyl Lypkivskyi described Christmas carols as follows in his Christmas sermon "The Meaning of Christmas Carols":
As a rudiment of ancient magical rituals, carols and bounties called on the gods (pagan "Oy Dazhdbozhe!", transformed into "Oh God!") to give the master (or mistress, servant, girl) good health and economic prosperity (which in ancient times was the obverse and reverse of the same medal), associated with a good harvest, favorable conditions for cultivating the land, profits for the lord (especially livestock). By means of artistic similes, epithets, metaphors, the owner, members of his family are glorified and praised, to whom they wish good fortune, health, love, good marriages, etc.
Колядование всегда начинают космогоническими колядками о создании Мира, а затем величают всех членов семьи с персональными пожеланиями каждому. Недавно установлено, что песни обладают своей энергетикой. Что интересно, старейшие украинские песни обладают огромной энергетикой. А самое интересное – самая большая энергетика именно у колядок и щедривок. В римских хрониках зафиксировано, что это столь древний обряд этрусков, что только наиболее одаренные Волхвы постигают его первоначальную сущность. А это значит, что возраст этих песен составляет не менее 5000–7000 лет. Любопытно, что щедривки сохранились только в Украине. Начинают возвращаться с забвения и умалчивания древние обычаи и обряды нашего народа. Большинство людей очень плохо их знают. Но без прошлого не бывает настоящего.
