From the beginning, these groups were all male, given that this ritual involves contact with death. Accordingly, women did not participate in it. We can already see how children and women carol. In fact, only men could do it. But, considering that this holiday is combined with the sun, the groups could not walk around the village chaotically. They followed the sun, and if it was a mountainous area, for example, the Carpathians, then they walked from below in a circle, climbing and going around each house. If the carolers did not enter a house, it means that a dead person's foot could be there, and this was a bad sign and they were very offended.
"Шедривки" – обрядовые песни, исполняемые в щедрый вечер, вечер в канун нового года. Они начинались обычно со слов приветствия: "Щедрый вечер, добрый вечер". В далеком прошлом этот тип песен отличался от других праздничных песен, сегодня он отличается тем, что их пекут в Украине и в украиноязычных селах области. На время, в которое мы теперь празднуем Рождество Христово, когда-то еще до христианства на Украине приходился праздник зимнего поворота солнца. Это было время гадания на будущий год; а потому мы и теперь имеем в рождественских обычаях целый ряд дохристианских элементов, которые имели своим предназначением навлечь хороший урожай в следующем году, богатство и благополучие в дом хозяина, счастливые ловли для охотника, свадьбу для девушки и счастливое путешествие для парня - дружинника князя самого княжича. Все стихийные силы природы умиротворяются и призываются, чтобы не действовали во вред людям и скоту.

It could not be a person, but an animal, that's how those animal images appeared in groups of carolers. It could be "strangers" by category - foreigner, that's how we have, for example, "German". These may not be people, but in general – demonic beings, so the carolers wrapped their hands with straw, stood on stilts or, conversely, squatted down, spoke in very deep, low voices, or, on the contrary, very squeaky.
